I’ve been using vampirefreaks since I was about 15 years old, finally becoming a regular active member in 2010. The media often like to portray the site as a dark, evil hangout for weirdos, rapists and murderers but honestly – the majority of regular users are normal people just like you and I.
The only thing that makes most of the VF users I’ve met different to – let’s say my next door neighbour Bob – is the fact they have some sort of interest (usually) in goth, industrial or alternative culture. They might like industrial or metal music. They might like to wear black or fishnets. They might like tattoos and piercings. They might love horror movies.
I cant say I’ve came across many people who like to sacrifice goats on Tuesdays, and drink the blood of virgins – but I can promise you now people like that will appear from time to time on EVERY site, not just one geared for the “weird kids”.
The media sometimes want people and parents to believe this site is a danger to people, but the real danger lies with people who have no common sense using the Internet – and that is their failing. The administrators of VF work extremely hard to keep the site safe and free of perverts. In serious cases they will even intervene if bullying is going on. Cant say the same for other large social networking sites where abusive pages are left open for the world and your children to see.
I’ve made a lot of friends on vampirefreaks and if you give the site a chance, join some cults (which is just another name for the forums) and start chatting to people then you will make friends too.
